“Coffins and Sarcophagi in Ancient Egypt

The workshop will attempt to make you familiar with the development of Egyptian coffins and sarcophagi. Together we will try to gain orientation on the often puzzling variety and diversity of coffin types. The planned exercises will assist you to understand the decoration of the coffins and to identify the workshops.

1.  We will start with an introduction to the different forms of coffins and sarcophagi in Egypt and try to define them.
2.  After a typological overview of the Middle Kingdom coffins, we will start to identify local workshops and styles.
3.  Together we will identify the beginning of the development of new coffin types during the Second Intermediate Period that leads to the New Kingdom standard types.
4.  Through sign-by-sign comparison, we will identify the sources of some prominent New Kingdom coffins and sarcophagi.
5.  Our last exercise will train us to distinguish early New Kingdom coffins from those of the third Intermediate Period and the following Late Period.

Dr. Martin von Falck studied Egyptology, Coptology and Classical Archaeology and completed his doctorate at the University of Münster. He has been working in Hamburg for the Edfu-Temple project of the Academy of Science in Göttingen since October 2005; and as lecturer in Egyptology at different Universities (Münster, Hamburg, Munich) since 2002.
