Welcome!
On this website, we have gathered some useful information for current and future American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) members and friends. We have upcoming events, especially lectures, listed on the Events page, and you can access recent copies of our Newsletters here. Our Membership page has more information on ARCE and our local chapter, plus a Membership Application form. On our Websites page, we list other ARCE chapters in the U.S. and some links to other interesting Egypt related  websites.  Our What's new page gives information about out-of-the-ordinary Chapter events and changes/additions to this website.

About ARCE/DC
The ARCE Chapter in Washington, DC (ARCE-DC) sponsors, on average, ten free lectures and one seminar a year, plus occasional social events. We sponsor tours to Egypt and organize occasional bus trips to museums that are featuring exhibitions on Egypt.  We maintain close contact with the Embassy of Egypt, which frequently  provides a speaking venue for our lecturers.  Our lectures are otherwise coordinated with and held at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Our chapter has approximately 150 members and the average attendance at lectures is approximately 50 people.  When held at the Egyptian Embassy, the number frequently exceeds 100 attendees.

ARCE-DC publishes a comprehensive weekly e-mail Newsletter via our Chapter Members Group listserv.  The Newsletter contains current articles, information and other items which should appeal to those who have an interest in Ancient Egypt.  Again, click on "Newsletters" here

Support for all our activities is greatly enhanced by members' contributions to our PAPYRUS Club.  Donations make Papyrus Club members eligible for an annual  drawing for a prize of a one-year subscription to the magazine KMT: A Modern Journal of Ancient Egypt.

About the hieroglyph in the background: Our chapter can also be referred to as Shemsu, which in Ancient Egyptian means "the followers." That's the meaning of the hieroglyphic logo you see in the background. It is thought to represent servants' staffs with supplies tied to them. Since ARCE/DC sees itself as a group of followers of Ancient Egypt, we have adopted this symbol.
